Q. Who is a professional Manager.

Ans. Management is a Discipline. The practitioner of this discipline is a professional manager.

Man who practise law - is a lawyer.

Man who practise medicine- is a doctor.

Man who practises management - is a manager.

A professional manager may or may not be qualified. He can be a professional manager by experience, by which he can learn the managerial skills. The main task of the manager is connected is connected to the company or organisation where he is working.

Job of manger is to collect and utilize the desired resources, to achieve the organisational objectives, which shows his performance..

Q. What are main activities and duties of a professional manager?

Ans 1) Set the objectives and mission of the organisation to be achieved by use of required resources. He has to control the organisational activities in order to achieve the objectives of the organisation.

2) The manager must make sure that the organisation survives and grows. In the competing world ,bigger organisations will grow faster and endanger the survival. The factors which influence survival are

Finances of organization

Quality of Managers

Image of organisation.

Technology choice and its modernisation.

Quality and efficiency of Labour.

These are internal and controllable factors.

Some other factors are which are out of control of organisation are

Government rules and regulations

Completion

Globalization,

Govt policies ,

Changing tastes, values of consumers

3) Perform efficiently to generate profits.

He must perform more efficiently to produce higher profit from the resources used. These are money, men machines and materials.

Organisation must produce higher profits which difference of value of inputs and outputs. Profits gives a possibility to expand and take risks.

The factors responsible for the unprofitable organisation are

Obsolescence,

High fixed cost,

High levelof wasteage

Production of goods not in demand .

4) Prepare and meet the challenge of competition.

Anticipate the competition.

Prepare for the competition from new competitors, new products , new quality, and new customers. Also the new methods of publicity are changing the face of competition.

5)) Bring in the innovation

It helps the manager to add new and better systems to the organisation. It adds value to the existing products and services. All innovations must be customer information based.

6) Build Human based organization

Most important resource in an organisation is Human being. Money , materials , machines, Can not produce

Results without men. Good constantly look for good workers with high potential to work in their team. This shows that human is the most important resource in a public limited organisation.

7) Reducing the rate of attrition and retaining the talent.

A public sector company can hire good staff & workers but can not retain unless they are satisfied with their work. They should get

a. Comfortable working environment

b. Degree of freedom to make decisions

c. Get satisfaction out of the work done

d. Allot the job which can use the skills and strength of the worker

e. Recognize. Appreciate and develop the talents

f. encourage open and direct communication.

g. Motivate the employee by meeting the needs desires etc.

8) Effective Leadership.

He must impart his influence to achieve the organisational goal. He must give importance to the interest and welfare of the staff.

9) Creativity

Creating new ideas, products, can be easy but it may be difficult to translate them into a profitable business. It may require complete planning and organising of finance, marketing and administration. So the people who create may be different than the people who may implement the idea.

10)Managerial obsolescence And its managing.

The managers tend to become obsolete without the continuous and updating their knowledge. They need motivating and redefining their jobs content.

11) Managing the change. Every manager has to manage the changes like social , political, economic

Technical and cultural. They have to introduce new types of production system, phase out the product lines.Change in the procedures ,planning and administration techniques. All these are changes which are resisted by the people. It is the task of a manager to implement the change.

12 Manager must adjust to the information system and new production system, Plants are getting automated, which can work without any stop and fatigue. Tht manager has to do the necessary adjustments regarding the workers becoming surplus .

13 Political and public criticism

The manager must keep away from the above. I t can be done by keeping all activities legal. He should avoid media attention and the attention of political parties.

14) Higher aspiration at all levels of organisation must be attended to by the manager. Other wise the gap between the aspiration and reality will create resentment among workers. Giving more autonomy ,responsibility, money, status can meet the aspirations .

These are most of the tasks performed by the managers.
